Pakistan silent about Muslims in China : Detention camps
Recently, a rally was held hundreds of Muslims in Jakarta. This happened outside the Chinese embassy located in the Indonesian capital. It was to protest against the treatment of members of the mostly Muslim ethnic Uighur minority of Muslims in China. They are mostly located in the far-western Xinjiang region.

Upto 1 million ethnic Muslims in that particular region are estimated to be detained in camps. Here, they are subjected to political indoctrination. They are forced to give up their religion.
The United Nations called for the immediate release of those who are detained on the “pretext of countering terrorism.”
China says Xinjiang faces a threat from Islamist militants and separatists. It rejects all accusations of mistreatment. It also denies mass internment. But some Chinese officials have said that some citizens guilty of minor offences were being sent to vocational centres to work.
China worries that the Muslins in China, who mostly speak a Turkic language, has gone to places like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria and Iraq to fight for militants. China has described its detention camps as vocational centres and has said that the trainees go to work there voluntarily.
A day before these protests, Pakistan defended China on the topic of the camps. There was a growing outcry over Muslims who were being detained Chinese authorities. Pakistan said that this outcry was being ‘sensationalised’ foreign media.
Mohammad Faisal, spokesman for Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “Some faction of foreign media are trying to sensationalise the matter spreading false information.”
Pakistan often rallies with much zeal while defending Islam and Muslims whenever they are perceived to be offended around the world. But it seems that the fear of losing its great investor, China, has kept them silent over the plight of Muslims in China.
